International R190 – Owner was Harold Davies Interstate Transport of Granville NSW. Trailer was a 35’ Freighter. Carl Thomson was the driver. Had the 372 red diamond petrol engine. Regular run was Wollongong to Adelaide carrying foundry coke and return to Sydney was usually with bagged salt on the bottom and caravans on top.
Carl’s R190 Between Hay & Balranald loaded with foundry coke bound for Adelaide. The highway was being prepared for asphalting, so all traffic was meant to use the temporary bypass road which was ok if it didn’t rain. After even a light shower of rain, anyone using the bypass got stuck in the black soil. Most drivers just got back onto the freshly graded highway base which chopped it up, much to the DMR’s disgust.
